Stopping Sabotage from Spoiling Your Dreams
Far too often, the success we plan for ourselves isn't supported as well as it could be. Others get jealous of our success or they fear that we will change too much and leave them. Even if you don't realize it and they don't realize it, you will encounter some troubles with sabotage. Unintentionally, people simply aren't always ready for you to change – even if you are. How you handle these situations and handle communication will not only increase your drive, but it will also help others begin to see that change is possible for them too.
Identifying Saboteurs
The trick with seeing who's sabotaging you is that it might be so subtle that you may not even realize it. This person may try to take you away from the things that are supporting your goals. They might want to see you more often or they will deliberately interrupt you when they know that you have other things on your mind. Or these people might say things that try to point out your selfishness in trying to make something more of yourself. You may also have people that buy you things or do things for you that in direct contrast to the goals you have in mind – i.e. people who give you food when they know you're trying to lose weight.
Just Saying No
When you encounter these sabotage situations, you need to do several things. Clear communication is key to making sure that the sabotage stops for good. Start by restating your goals to this person and then tell them that while you appreciate them, you have to do things differently in order to reach the goals you want to reach. By taking a moment to thank them for their thoughts and actions, you will show that you're not ungrateful, but you do need to tell them no to whatever they are offering. If they send you things, you will want to let them know that you received them and that you will not be using them/eating them. When you accept things, the saboteurs may continue to use this technique to try to hinder your efforts.
If They Don’t Stop
Some people will have troubles even with this clear communication, constantly trying to hinder your success and your change. When you run into people like this, you need to be a little more firm in your interactions. Reiterate the things that you don't enjoy and then make sure that you are not interacting with them if they continue the actions. This will mean telling them that you don’t want to see them until they can respect your plans – which will be hurtful to them in the beginning. But in terms of your success, this will be crucial.
Standing up for yourself might be a new process, but it's something that will only solidify your intentions and your ability to succeed. The more you tell people no and the more you let them know that you are changing and you're happy about it, the easier it will be for them to come to terms with it too.
