Knowing Your Trading Options

You don’t have to be an expert at working the stock market to make money, as long as you know your trading options.  How can you find information on these options, and where do you turn for advice on when to trade what commodity?

Trading options are a bit complex, considering that you have to take into account that there are millions of different stocks, bonds, and other securities in which you can trade.  Purchasing stocks allows you to profit as a company increases in value and the economy strengthens.  Bonds allow you to earn interest on money loaned to a corporation for capital.  Mutual funds are also an option, allowing you to pool your money with other investors to purchase shares that more widely diversify your investment.

Your trading options begin with the purchase of one or more types of securities, as listed above.  Upon making your decision, you have further options in how to pay for the securities.  Many brokers have an option to lend you the money for the stocks you wish to purchase for a short period of time, followed by a repayment when you short sell, or return, the stock for a profit.  You keep the profit and simply repay the amount borrowed to buy the stock, as well as a small amount of interest.  This can be a risky venture, but if the brokerage feels that the stock is a “sure thing”, they will front the money.

Other trading options occur when it is time to choose when to buy and sell.  Of course, you want to buy at the lowest possible cost and sell for the highest amount so that you can maximize your profit.  However, you have trading options that can allow you to set an automatic amount for trading back and forth, or you can physically watch the trends and determine for yourself when you are optimized to make a trade.  You even have trading options in how to make the transaction – you can work alone or with a broker; in person, by phone, or online; and you will achieve the same goal in multiple ways.  If you know all your trading options, you’ll be better equipped to make wise decisions when entering the investment market.
