What Makes One Rich?
Almost everyone you meet seems to want to be rich, seeks to be rich, or could already be considered rich. What does it actually mean to be rich and how do you decide what rich is? With so many questions out there, it is safe to assume that the idea of riches and wealth is very much a subjective or relative one. Everyone has their own ideas of what it means, although they may be vague, even fanciful in nature. The question for riches is one that has been addressed at various times and places and has a deep trove of lore associated with it, from that long sought pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to scratching a winning lottery ticket.
As you begin to investigate what people think about wealth and being rich, you start to see how fluid this concept really is. For some, the term is not immediately attached to a specific dollar amount but rather an overall level of comfort and financial security. In this situation, being rich means having the capacity to do what you need and want to do without worrying about money or whether making one purchase will upset the balance of your budget.
Others think of rich in terms of idyllic images and settings—such as having the bigger house, the perfect car or cars, living in a classier neighborhood, etc. You have this perfect place this perfect vision of what you would do if you simply had such and such, whatever you might have in mind. But, is this all that being rich entails?
The basic equation for some is having money available whenever they need it. Being rich becomes a matter of having all of the finances in order so that you are not reduced to living paycheck-to-paycheck month after month. In this way the lines between wealthy and merely comfortable, financially speaking, begin to blur for many people.
What strangles the lives of many people is the reckless pursuit if riches. They want to easy path to their own personal "lifestyle of rich and famous," but fail to recognize the common path to this fantastic status is one of hard work, perseverance, and the willingness to invest in the future and lay the road to wealthy retirement. This remains the tried and true path to become rich for the majority of the population—we all can get lucky at the slop machines or the lottery after all.
