What's The Rich List?

For those who want to stay informed on the status of the rich and powerful in the United Kingdom, the British-based newspaper, the Sunday Times, has been the publisher of a so-called Rich List. The list provides readers with the names and pertinent financial statistics of the wealthy individuals and families who are living in or at least have residences in the U.K. It is an annually produced list that has been published continuously by the Sunday Times since 1989.

The scope of the Rich List is based upon the ranking of the top 1,000 rich in Britain, while Ireland, Scotland list significantly smaller numbers of the wealthy—250 and 100 respectively. If you go to the Times Online website, you can access an interactive version of the Sunday Times Rich List that allows the user to selected different categories that are used to generate the current rich lists including those for Britain, Scotland, Ireland, as well as for demographical groups like women and young people. By clicking on the links, the appropriate listings are generated interactive tables.

You can also use a search feature to type in specific people so that only the results for them appear. Similarly, the search tool can be used to select listings by industry and keywords, which can be used to create a narrow search framework. Once you have a listing before you will notice that it is organized primarily by rank from one to the final listing depending upon the country or demographic targeted. Also, the name, worth, and industry are provided for your information.

A further dimension of the Rich List search tool is that you can click on the names of those who occupy the list and get a bit more detail about them. Typically, a small biographical blurb is available for reading. It is at this point that you can take advantage of another useful feature. While on the same page, you can actual search the Sunday Times website for related stories that feature the person you've been reviewing.

All of these features have allowed the Sunday Times Rich List to become an integrated part of the whole website. In turn, this has allowed for greater versatility and interactive experience for those who may be interested in researching the wealthy who made the Rich List.
