How To Choose Your First Share Broker
Those who are new to investing in stocks and securities, the idea that you need a share broker may be a cause for hesitation. This is mainly because they do not completely understand how most transactions involving the trade of shares are carried out and that a broker is the essential "middleman" in this process. Novice investors may be compelled by a desire to go their own way and feel that a share broker would stand in the way of their plans, but this could not be further from the truth.
Sometimes, the reticence of the investor is due to not understanding what a share broker is and what one does for the investor. Before discussing the characteristics of a good broker and explain how to choose the right one, it will help to define the broker. The typical broker functions in a role not unlike a salesperson does in that they buy and sell stocks. When you hire a share broker you are hiring an agent from a brokerage firm that charges certain rates for transaction services on you, the investor's, behalf. The broker is paid by commission on sales or a set salary by the firm, although there is also a mixture of these payment types involved.
Once you know what are share broker is you can see the necessity of having one involved in your investing activity. This leads to the next question: how do you choose a share broker? In some sense, choosing a broker is a matter of taste and preferences. There are all types of brokerage houses out there and all of them have their own methods for serving their clients. Another consideration may be price. This can mean the difference between choosing a full-service brokerage and a discount brokerage firm.
The choice is also one based upon how much help you need with your investment planning. Full service brokers offer not only basic share transaction but also a host of products, services, information, and advice about finance and investment. Of course, this is the real difference between full-service and discount. If you do not need all of the frills, but just a simple transaction service, then discount is the way to go.
Another aspect that deserves some attention is whether you wish to have easy access to your investment portfolio and receive constant updates through an online account. This is where the future of the share broker is taking shape.
