“Frugal Cooking – You Don’t Have To Compromise On Taste!”
By:
Eric Verbonac
These days, when most of us are looking for great value wherever we can find it, and are willing to go to all kinds of lengths to ensure we get a great bargain, you only have to mention frugal cooking to have us running for our purses. We might love a bargain, but we love our food more, and we’d rather pay high prices for pre-prepared tasty meals, or just damn the expense and go out for dinner, rather than pinch our pennies here. But it is possible to save money on your food budget without eating meals that taste like boiled cardboard!
The two things that many of us like to save are time and money – we don’t like to spend a fortune, and we don’t want to spend all day fixing food. For these reasons, we can sometimes end up spending a fortune on ready-made meals whose ingredients include more preservatives than you’d like to think about. But we don’t have to spend hours slaving over a stove, baking, boiling and barbequing until we are red in the face, and we don’t have to spend a fortune on exotic ingredients to produce strange concoctions from incomprehensible recipes.
So How Does This Frugal Cooking Thing Work?
Many of us are spending a fortune on our grocery bill because we are under the illusion that the best way to get a tasty meal without spending hours in front of the grill is to buy those pre-prepared meals that only involve some quick heating in the microwave. But this food-fixing phobia is only having us spend more money on food than we need to, and filling our bodies with recipes that are full of salt and other additives. But we associate home cooking with hard work and messy kitchens with ingredients strewn everywhere, pots boiling over, and strange stuff baked on to the inside of our ovens. But it really doesn’t have to be this way!
Firstly, frugal cooking involves purchasing basic ingredients rather than pre-prepared meals – this is a basic switch that will have you doing a double take at your grocery bill. Basic ingredients, vegetables, herbs and other recipe staples, are far cheaper than those ready made meals, and many of them, such as spices, will last for ages. You will be amazed at how much money you save simply by purchasing simple ingredients.
And once you get them all home, you’re not going to have to spend hours boiling and baking the life out of them – this is an assumption that ready meal makers want you to believe, but frugal home cooking is surprisingly easy! Find yourself a good basic cookbook – there are so many out there that cater specifically for today’s busy person who doesn’t have the time for elaborate recipes – and just get started! If you have been reheating for years, it might take a while to get the hang of it, but after a few sessions in the kitchen, you will be a food-fixing whiz.
So what are you waiting for? – Your budget and your body will thank you for it.
